Photos & Musings: Other Riders

Ricky Johnson

I was sent this snapshot recently which I really like. This was taken in summer 1989 at my local practice track in Worcester, now called Apex.

Ricky Johnson, who was the dominant US rider at the time was out with a broken wrist and paid a surprise visit to the UK to promote the NEC supercross which he would be hopefully racing in later that year. He stopped by at Apex to conduct a training school for a few lucky riders.

I used to practice there several times a week and was out riding my 500 around the hardpack supercross track when he arrived. It was a real pleasure to meet such a great rider as Ricky.

Someone even told me recently that while he was teaching he made some comments about me 'doing it properly' or something like that. I'm flattered Rick!
