Career Highlights

1977: First started racing, age 14. Severn Valley Schoolboy Scramble Club. 1974 Suzuki TM125.

1978: Raced with Warley Wasps Schoolboy Scramble club. Yamaha YZ125/Maico MC125.

1979: 5th place, BSMA schoolboy national championship. Kawasaki KX125.

1980: Moved to adult class. 3rd place Midland Centre 125cc championship. Bryan Wade/BMRS Honda CR125.

1981: British Championship support class. Stormer Maico 490.

1982: British Championship support class. Stormer Honda CR480.

1983: 3rd place, British Championship support class. Qualified to move up into top 35 for 1984. Yamaha YZ250.

1984: 23rd place, British Open Championship. Yamaha YZ250. Contested my first three 250cc GPs. Failed to qualify at French GP and British GP at Newbury. Qualified for first GP at Bielstein, Germany.

1985: Maico 500/Kawasaki 500:
  • Started season on Maico 500, contesting 500cc World Championship
  • Failed to qualify at first GP in Austria, but qualified for every remaining GP
  • Close to scoring first points in Italy when had tyre roll off rim
  • Switched to Kawasaki mid-season, with support from Kawasaki UK
  • Scored top ten result in Luxembourg and finished in 39th place in the World Championship
  • 11th place in the British Open Championship
  • Selected to race for Great Britain in the Motocross des Nations. Finished in 6th place in the 125 class at the MXdN

1986: Factory Kawasaki:
  • 2nd overall at opening GP in Austria, where I had failed to qualify the previous year
  • Finished 9th in the 500cc World Championship after mid-season off-track arm injury
  • Finished 6th place in the British Open Championship

1987: John Banks Racing/Honda UK:
  • 3rd place Open Pro class at the Golden State series in California
  • 2nd in first moto of German 500cc GP
  • Finished 16th place in the World 500cc Championship after mid-season knee injury
  • Finished 5th place in the British Open Championship

1988: Factory Kawasaki:
  • Not a good year with bike/team issues.
  • Finished 26th place in the World 500cc Championship
  • Finished 8th place in the British Open Championship
  • 1st place, Orly International, France
  • 1st place, Bullet International, Switzerland

1989: Bikesport Honda/Honda UK:
  • Finished 38th place in the World 500cc Championship
  • Finished 8th place in the British Open Championship

1990: Bikesport Honda/Honda UK:
  • Finished 25th place in the World 500cc Championship
  • Finished 14th place in the British Open Championship

1991 - 1998: Bike Test Editor - Dirt Bike Rider magazine.
